What a day! As expected, your entire team is exhausted after putting together and pulling off the one day concert. The good news, however, is that the event really seemed to be effective at presenting the emergency management procedures to a lot of people at all levels of the community. Plus, it allowed you to connect with a number of outside companies and contractors.
You were extremely busy throughout the day though, so you didn’t get to meet as many people as you had intended. Regardless, the intended information was disseminated successfully and the County seems more prepared than they were previously.
The day comes to an end (click: "The day comes to an end")[(goto: "Week 3 Summary")](set: $inventory to it + (a: "Tabletop"))
The airport table-top drill was overall a success. You got to meet the heads of a lot of the departments you hadn’t met yet (and you got to apologize once again to the Folly Beach Fire Chief) and your team did a good job facilitating the two hypothetical situations: a pandemic outbreak and a terror event.
A few of the major feedback elements you received after its conclusion were:
Participants feel that they now have a greater understanding of a variety of roles needed in a hazardous event
Participants felt that having the ability to reason through their response to an event was overall beneficial, especially when such time won’t be available in the midst of a situation
Participants felt that the event was well-organized and executed
Participants had some challenges with navigating and conveying information within their groups
Overall, you feel as though your choice to run a table-top drill was a beneficial one. Getting to know who the major players are and watch how they share information is important to you in your role going forward.
The day comes to an end (click: "The day comes to an end")[(goto: "Week 3 Summary")](set: $inventory to it + (a: "Flooding Exercise"))
You woke up early on the day of the exercise excited to see what would happen and were not disappointed. The participating team, while smaller than it might have been with other events, was serious and extremely focused, which led to what you believe was a very successful day.
While the flooding wasn’t real, you and the members from EMS, multiple Fire and Police Departments, and a few selected community organizers worked together to help with a number of unforeseen circumstances related to issues that had happened previously. It all felt very realistic and useful.
As a result of the exercise, a number of participants created a Charleston Flooding Response Team to offer leadership and assistance during Flooding Events throughout the county.
The day comes to an end (click: "The day comes to an end")[(goto: "Week 3 Summary")](set: $inventory to it + (a: "Pig Roast"))
Boy was that a fun event! South Carolina provided you with a beautiful summer day to host your pig roast/plan review. It got started around 8 am with a number of grill masters coming in and getting set up. The roast took a long time to cook, so people started coming in around noon to collect food and mingle with others in the government and community.
Once the presentations started, it looked like people weren’t paying full attention, but overall it seemed like information was presented in a clear way.
You were kept so busy, however, that you weren’t able to meet as many people as you would have liked. As a result, you’re unsure as to the effectiveness of the event.

(link: "Finished Reading")[It's already lunchtime! How quickly time has passed. Your department organized [[a barbeque to welcome you to the team->BBQ]].]
8:50 AM - Day One

You look up at your new office building - compared to the rest of the city, it's nondescript, but government buildings aren't usually built to be admired. Smoothing down your clothes one last time, you enter the building and are immediately greeted by your boss, the Executive Director of Public Safety and Emergency Response.
She walks you toward your new personal offices, showing you some of the building and making introductions as you go. (click: "She walks you toward your new personal offices, showing you some of the building and making introductions as you go.")[

You spend the next hour getting to know your personal staff before settling down in front of your computer. Your assistant had helpfully populated your schedule with meetings for the next week. You have a couple of hours free now to examine the dossier of materials on your desk.
[[You pour yourself a new cup of coffee and open up the folder.->Wikipedia]] ]]
September 10

It’s been 18 months since you started your job.
It’s a lovely September day in Charleston. Winds are light at 10 miles per hour, skies are clear, and while the temperature is 85 F, at midday the relative humidity is only 55%. Unbeknownst to you, over the Sahara a hot updraft has begun coalescing into a storm with intention.

[[You carry on your day as usual|Storm Starts to Build]]
September 15.

5 days later and this storm is starting to get people’s attention. It’s made its way to the eastern edge of the Caribbean and rapidly strengthened to a category 5 hurricane named Hurricane Fordon. Realizing that storms will do whatever they want, nonetheless the best models are suggesting the storm will come ashore as a hurricane somewhere between Melbourne Beach, FL and Virginia Beach, Virginia.
You start to think about the current state of community preparedness and decide to:

The weather is decidedly cooler in the mid 70’s but the humidity is in the 90’s and as everyone knows, it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity. Two days ago the storm pounded Haiti and Cuba and although there was some loss of integrity of the eye wall, the National Hurricane Center notes that as of today the eye has reformed and is now over the Bahamas as a major hurricane and the predicted track now runs through Charleston County. You feel like it’s time to take some definitive action.

[[You take note of everything, knowing that you’ll need to use it to file a report later->Long Term Update]] It’s been six months since Hurricane Fordon made landfall and transformed Charleston and Berkeley County. It’s time to submit your after action report. Since you haven’t had to do one before, you choose to review the Florida State Emergency Response Team Action Report for Hurricane Matthew and the CDC AAR for Hurricane Katrina. After reviewing the both of these documents you begin the process of thinking about not just the response to Hurricane Fordon but also your decisions in the 18 months leading up to the response. These reflections will serve as the basis for your group After Action Report.
This is the end of the emergency preparedness scenario, return to the course to complete the associated assignments.
